About Ardbeg Whisky –

Ardbeg Distillery has been producing whiskey since 1798, and began commercial production in 1815. Like Scottish distilleries, for most of its history, its whiskey was produced for use in blended whiskey rather than as a single malt. By 1886 the distillery produced 300,000 gallons of whiskey annually and employed 60 workers. Production was halted in 1981, but resumed on a limited basis in 1989 and continued at a reduced level until late 1996 under the ownership of Ardbeg Hiram Walker.

In 1997 the distillery was bought by Glenmorangie plc (later taken over by the French company LVMH on 28 December 2004) and reopened and production resumed on 25 June 1997 and full production resumed in 1998. The distillery was reopened and opened by hand by Ed Dod19. Stuart Thomson, who managed it from 1997 to 2006. Michael “Mickey” Heads, a native of Islay and former manager at Jura, who had worked at Ardbeg a few years earlier, took over on 12 March 2007. Colin Gordon followed in his footsteps. August 2020. In July 2022, the distillery sold a 1975 cask to a private collector for £16 million, breaking Macallan’s record for the highest cask sale price.

Tasting Notes Of Ardbeg Whisky –

  • COLOUR:- Amber pale gold
  • NOSE:- Bonfire smoke next to the ocean, peat with toasted oak and vanilla, green pine branches and spices. Tar coated poles with hints of cigar smoke. Salted caramel and toffee apple sweetness. Big and bold, typical Ardbeg nose.
  • PALATE:- Ash, charred wood with earthy peat and salt. Big, creamy and bold, right in your face. There is a fruity sweetness and vanilla behind the smoke mixed with some espresso and bitter chocolate on the second sip.
  • Sorch has the typical Ardbeg medicinal notes with a meaty flavour and a light lemon pepper sprinkling. It was so amazing; we finished our first glass without water. Complex and not an every day drinking dram.
  • FINISH:- A long and lingering finish. With notes of ash and smoke and toasted oak and lemon pepper.
